Corded Power Tools Vs Cordless - What's the Best Option?

If you're looking to buy a new power tool such as a drill or saw, there's one big decision to factor in. Corded or cordless. There are benefits and disadvantages of both options. Here's a few things to consider before you hit the hardware store.

Cordless Power Tool

The first option that most people consider is cordless. There are a lot of immediate benefits to having a cordless power tool. The most obvious is that you don't have to mess around with a cord. Depending on where you are working in your house, it can be difficult to find an empty plug to use. With a cordless model you have the freedom to move around. This is fantastic if you are doing several home improvement jobs at the same time. You can work inside and outside without having to constantly plug and unplug your tool.

Cordless Power Tool

There are also several disadvantages to cordless tools. The biggest is charging the battery. It takes several hours to recharge a cordless battery pack. Unless you plan ahead, this can put a wrinkle in you home fix it plans. Also, battery packs tend to lose capacity over time and eventually won't hold a decent charge. You'll need to factor in the price of replacement battery packs when making your buying decision.

Moving on to corded tools, the biggest advantage is not having to mess around with battery packs. Just plug it in and you've got full power immediately. Another nice thing is that corded power tools are usually cheaper than similar cordless models. Unless you are planning on doing projects outside far away from power outlets, a corded model may be all you need to get the job done.

Cordless Power Tools - Batteries Are the Key

Batteries are the key to any cordless power tool, whether choosing a cordless drill, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, or any other type of cordless tool. Battery voltage is not the single most important factor to consider when choosing cordless power tools. With cordless tools available all the way up to 36 volts, amperage/hour, and battery type must also be taken into account. Many 14.4 volt tools will outperform 19.2 volt tools due to battery type and amp/hr rating.

Cordless Power Tool

Battery Rating Basics

Cordless Power Tool

Amperage hours and voltage are used to rate a cordless tool battery. Amperage hours are used to determine how long a battery will last and voltage refers to the flow or strength of the electrical current. As I was taught in high school shop class the theory of electrical current is easier to understand if you think of it as water being pumped through a pipe.

Voltage is used to measure the speed at which water is flowing through the pipe. Amperage represents the size of pipe that will be filled to capacity. Amperage hour rates how long the flow can be maintained or how long the battery will last.

As you can see by using this analogy the higher the voltage in conjunction with higher amp/hr the stronger the battery. Cordless power tool batteries are usually available in 1.4, 2.4, and 3.0 amp/hr. The amp/hr rating of the battery can be found on either the side or bottom of most batteries.

Battery Types

There are three types of batteries used in modern cordless power tools.

Ni - Cad ( Nickel - Cadmium ) are the oldest type used and are prone to developing a memory and early failure. Even when properly maintained they are lucky to be recharged 400 times before failure occurs. Ni -MH ( Nickel Metal Hydride ) are a newer design than Ni - Cad and can develop a memory, though not as quick. The worst issue discovered with this type of battery, the higher the amp/hr rating, the fewer charge cycles before battery failure occurs. Li - Ion ( Lithium - Ion ) are the newest type available and much better, compact, and expensive than the other two types. Memory is not a problem, and manufacturers claim up to 1,200 charging cycles before replacement.
Charging Time

Is another important consideration when considering cordless power tool batteries. Many older batteries need charging after only an hour or less of work and require six hours of charging time. If you have a lot of work to perform can you afford to wait for your batteries to recharge? There are Lithium - Ion batteries available that only require 15 minutes to recharge.

Stability and Maintenance

With the high cost of replacement batteries for cordless tools it pays to follow manufacturers recommendations for the care and maintenance of these tools. Cordless power tool batteries are just like any other piece of equipment and have an expected service life. When they become worn out and need replacing it is sometimes more economical to replace the entire tool kit. The cost of two replacement batteries is often times more than a new cordless tool with charger and two batteries.

Power Tool Battery Directory - NiCad, NiMH, and Li-Ion Batteries in Your Cordless Tools

It can be easy to dismiss the importance of a high-quality battery in the functioning of your cordless tools. As it turns out, however, a good battery is just as essential to a cordless tool as a healthy armature or motor. Battery technology has significantly advanced since the introduction of cordless power tools; since the development of the Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), power tool batteries have evolved from NiCad to Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), and most recently to Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) technology.

Cordless Power Tool

Nickel Cadmium batteries were the first on the market for cordless power tools and though the technology is older, it is still very reliable. NiCads are less sensitive to adverse temperatures and have a high recharge cycle, meaning they can be charged and recharged repeatedly for a long period of time. NiCads are also less expensive than NiMH and Li-Ion batteries. On the down-side, however, NiCads tend to suffer from battery memory effect. This occurs when a battery can no longer accept a complete charge because it had been repeatedly charged without first being fully depleted. It seems the battery "remembers" how much energy it has discharged, and only wants to accept back that much energy from charger. The element Cadmium is highly toxic making it the most harmful battery to the environment. The NiCad's negative effects on the environment, in fact, cause them to be heavily taxed outside the U.S.A. As a result, many European vendors won't sell NiCad batteries.

Cordless Power Tool

Nickel Metal Hydride batteries run on a higher amperage than NiCads, because of this, they also have a longer run-time. NiMHs are lighter than NiCads but they are far more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, in fact, NiMH can't work in below freezing temperatures (32 degrees Fahrenheit and below) and they degrade very quickly in intensely high temperatures (105 degrees Fahrenheit an up). Although the NiMH has a longer run-time than the NiCad it doesn't accept as many charges. NiCad and NiMH batteries do have very similar overall lifespans but NiMH has a larger energy storage capacity.

Lithium Ion batteries have a higher energy density than most other rechargeable batteries. A high energy density means that the Lithium Ion has a superior energy to weight ratio storing more energy for their size than most other batteries. Li-Ions have a very slow self-discharge rate meaning they retain their charge for much longer. Most rechargeable batteries significantly deplete as they are disengaged, the slow rate of charge-loss in Li-Ions, however, allows them to maintain most of their charge for longer periods, even on a shelf in your shop or garage.

There are many benefits to working with Lithium Ion batteries from their light-weight, to their long run-time. Li-Ions maintain their charge for much longer and have continuous max power throughout their energy discharge cycle. Other batteries consistently lose power as you work. Li-Ions are light-weight, and have a huge storage capacity, this means you now have a lighter, more efficient and powerful battery without the bulk. Lithium Ion batteries are by a landslide the least detrimental to our environment, and for many reasons they are the favorite of most craftsmen.

There are, however, some disadvantages to Lithium Ion batteries. Li-Ions are a bit more expensive. The complexities of production (in circuitry) accounts for this price difference. Each Li-Ion also requires a specifically built charger to accommodate that type of battery; this means that chargers are more expensive as well, and aren't universal to all types of Li-Ion batteries. The Li-Ion has a built-in chip that protects the battery from over and undercharging, and ensures it has a longer life. This computer chip, however, doesn't allow the battery to continue accepting charge once its energy level has dropped below a certain point. Once this happens the battery is essentially dead. Li-Ions also rely on this circuit to stay cool. Since Li-Ions lose charge so slowly, and the battery and charger communicate so well together, it's fairly simple to keep Lithium Ions temperate and at a safe charge level.

Remember, the quality of the battery you use is just as important as the quality of your power tool. The battery gives the right amounts of energy and finesse to your tools and their working parts.

Cordless Power Tool Battery- Ni-cd- Ni-Mh or Li-ion?

There is a burning desire for all of us in the trades to swap our power cords for a cordless power tool. Battery life and its power band must meet our jobsite needs, if the purchase is to improve our productivity and enjoyment of our craft. With all the innovations in cordless battery pack technology how does one make the right purchase .. without paying for what you don't need?

Cordless Power Tool

We've all experience the frustration of running out of power, unable to find a freshly charged cordless battery pack. We all know that the minute we take the cordless drill outside it loses half of its power. And we all know that muscle fatigue is a big issue when we get into the larger voltage cordless tools.. all of which sometimes convinces us to return to the corded model. But are there better answers?

Cordless Power Tool

Ni-Cd: This is the old time favourite of cordless tool batteries. It has a long history of reliable performance, even in cold weather applications. Batteries are typically less expensive than other alternatives. Some have suggested that these batteries suffer from "memory affect problems" but some manufacturers like DeWalt and Miwaukee dispute this with their new professional quality models.

As a more environmentally conscious population, we have concerns in using cadmium based batteries, and so there is consumer resistance in supporting this option in light of more environmentally friendly Nickel Metal-hydride models.

Nickel Metal-hydride: These are kind of what we would think of as a second generation cordless battery pack. It entered the market with promises of more power and lighter weight, both of which it achieved but at a price! The cell design of a metal hydride battery generates more heat in both the dissipation and charging cycle. In fact it generates so much heat that the charger typically includes a fan to cool the unit during re-charging. This added heat creates a battery that doesn't survive as many charging cycles as its old cadmium cousin, suggesting higher replacement cost leading to less consumer satisfaction.

Of the three common types of cordless batteries metal-hydride are also the one least able to survive fluctuations in temperature. In cold weather it loses significant power, thus if you are an all weather framer, although the lower weight may appeal to you, it is not the battery pack to purchase. On the other hand if your use is more related to indoor cabinetry it may be the perfect light weight option.

Li-ion: This is going to be the battery to watch. Although it has not been on the market for long, initial experience would suggest that it will be the best of the three in cold weather operation. It is also the lightest of the three in direct comparison of "size to voltage".

So what's the down side? Cost. Li-ion cordless batteries are the most expensive of the lot. For long life usage, li-ion batteries must have electronic circuitry on board to balance the charging and discharging load across all battery cells. They also require longer re-charge times to allow for individual cell rebalancing, as a means for extending the life of your battery pack, thus if you are constantly draining and recharge over short periods of time a Ni-cd may be a better choice. Time will tell if this technology will have long term reliability and find solutions to the longer re-charge issues.

So what are the trade offs you should consider? A balance between weight and power is always the first and foremost consideration. Don't buy a 7 pound Big Bertha if all you are going to do is predrill 1/8" holes and don't worry about cold weather performance if you are always working in a heated shop. Recharging speed won't be a big issue if you're the casual user and of course we'd all like to buy with a good environmental conscious.

Thus for a comparative analysis of Ni-Cd, NiMh and Li-ion for each work environment see our table of Cordless Power Tool Battery options. Find out as well, what is the one rating on cordless batteries that will allow you to compare power output on two identical voltage rated batteries. Visit our website http://www.woodsTheBest.com.

Power Tools: Cordless Drill Batteries

If you have a home workshop you must know how important it is to have a good cordless drill. A cordless drill is an essential part of your tool kit as it lets you do a number of things easily and quickly. So when you buy a cordless drill, make sure that you buy a high- quality product that will last long. One thing to look for while buying this tool is the batteries. Cordless drill batteries should be durable, long-lasting and able to withstand long hours of work.

Cordless Power Tool

Fortunately, today's batteries that come with most drills are a huge improvement from what we had some years ago. You have to remember that taking care of batteries will ensure that your tools last longer. Exposing batteries to extreme temperatures for long stretches of time repeatedly will not only make your tools short- lived, it will also render them useless after sometime. Batteries should be kept in warm and dry weather all the time for optimal performance.

Cordless Power Tool

When the time comes for you to replace your old cordless drill batteries, don't throw with in with the trash especially if they happen to be nickel-cadmium ones. Cadmium is highly toxic and can leach into the ground from landfills, contaminating water sources and pose a significant environmental risk. Nickel- cadmium batteries should be recycled or disposed of properly.

The size and power of the batteries depends on the size and power of your cordless drill. Also, to make your batteries work well, you need to ensure that your battery charger is good.

Corded Versus Cordless - The Benefits and Disadvantages of Corded and Cordless Power Tools

Innovations across the power tool industry have improved the durability, strength and maneuverability of both corded and cordless power tools. Cordless equipment, it seems, is becoming vastly more popular as battery and motor technologies continue to improve. New developments like Lithium-Ion battery technology has upped the ante for battery powered tools, but other innovations have certainly not left corded power tools in the dust. New advancements in corded power equipment designs have made corded tools, once cumbersome and lumbering, lighter weight and far easier to handle. Corded power tools still offer unrivaled power and performance, and generally have a longer life-span; when picking a tool, however, it is still not an easy choice as cordless equipment offers compact ergonomics and superior mobility.

It's important to consider a few things before deciding which tool best suits you and your needs. The type of job and intensity of applications, the materials you intend to manipulate, and how often you will use your power tools are all factors in choosing between cordless and corded.

Cordless Power Tool

"So, what are the benefits of cordless tools?" you ask. Well, I'll tell you. Cordless power tools allow craftsmen to take their equipment to the job rather than bringing work back to their tools; bringing work back to the shop or a stable power source can be a frustrating chore if not wholly impossible. Battery powered tools offer superior convenience and portability, and with greater advancements in battery technology and tool design, cordless equipment now has more power, less weight, and a longer run-time than ever before. Another striking benefit of using cordless power tools is, well, they're cordless! Lugging and dragging around heavy cords can not only be a hassle but a hazard as well. For this reason, battery powered equipment also tends to be easier to store and transport. Cordless tools are ideal for home use and for use in high-traffic areas where cords can present a bigger safety hazard. Additionally, these cord-free tools are absolutely essential when working in unfinished constructions where, perhaps, there is no electrical power source available. However, it's not all sunshine while working cordless, although their convenience is unmatched, they can't offer the constant high power that corded tools can. Battery powered equipment are less powerful to begin with and most (excluding those using Lithium-Ion batteries) lose power continuously as you work. Unlike corded, cordless power tools have a limited power source and rely on a fully charged battery to run efficiently. Working cordless also tends to be a bit heavier, and batteries can be expensive to replace.

Intrigued, you now ask, "Ah, so what then are the advantages of using corded tools?" Well, let me tell you. Working corded offers significantly more power and a constant, non-dwindling power source for continuous run-time. Corded tools offer a wider variety for more diverse applications and deliver the highest-performance for the most heavy-duty jobs. Corded equipment allows users to perform without stops ensuring projects are completed without the hassle of changing and charging batteries. Because of their superior power and nonstop performance, working corded is ideal for heavier construction jobs. They also tend to be less expensive - and you'll never have to replace a pricey battery either. Cordless tools are a stronger, more durable tool and are essential where jobs require constant and superior power. Corded equipment provides unmatched power and deliver the most professional results to even the heaviest, heartiest, beefiest applications. On the other hand, while corded power tools don't require battery replacements, they do have that lumbering cord; that heavy, fraying cord requires replacement as often as a battery does. While cords are generally less expensive to replace, they are much more frustrating and time consuming. Power cords present more problems than simply fraying or failing altogether - cords are dangerous; they present a serious electrical hazard, and are fairly easy to trip over. Corded equipment also has limited mobility, and as its generally recommended to avoid using extension cords (which present an additional safety hazard) corded tools shouldn't go too far from the power source they're drawing from.

When choosing a tool, it is crucial to consider the capacities of of both corded and cordless types. Each offers different advantages to suit different demands and applications. Know the type of jobs you expect to perform, the type of materials you'll be working with, and consider how often you'll be firing up your tools - knowing these three things should help you choose precisely which tool, corded or cordless, will be your best companion on the job.
